HOUSTON (May 29, 2024) – With storms already impacting the area and the approach of what is predicted to be a highly active 2024 hurricane season, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston’s Meals on Wheels program will be delivering shelf-stable emergency meals to thousands of Meals on Wheels clients with the help of over 250 community-focused volunteers on June 1st and June 8th. This year’s project, called Operation IMpact, is made possible by presenting sponsor CITGO.
Beginning this weekend, through the Operation IMpact initiative, on June 1st, 200 cars will be delivering emergency meal supplies in Houston at 3202 San Jacinto Street Houston, Texas 77004, and on June 8th, 50 cars will be delivering in Galveston County at 216 Byrd Street, La Marque, Texas 77568. Volunteers will begin arriving at 8:45 AM on both days to start their delivery routes. Members of the press are invited to attend and cover the event as we embark on this crucial mission to support our senior community.
Each weekday, Interfaith Ministries’ Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston and Galveston County Program delivers meals to over 5,600 homebound seniors who struggle to prepare meals for themselves safely. However, during extreme weather, delivering these meals becomes increasingly challenging and sometimes impossible.
To address these challenges, Operation IMpact equips Meals on Wheels seniors with five-packs of single-serving shelf-stable meals and emergency supplies, ensuring they have access to essential resources during emergencies.
“We recognize the vulnerability of our seniors during times of crisis, and Operation IMpact serves as a crucial lifeline for those who rely on our Meals on Wheels program,” said Martin B. Cominsky, President and CEO of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. “With the generous support of our presenting sponsor, CITGO, our Harris County sponsor, Energy Transfer, we can ensure that our seniors are prepared and supported during the upcoming hurricane season.”
Interfaith Ministries urges community members to continue supporting this vital initiative by donating. The organization still needs to raise about $40,000 for the program to cover the costs of all the shelf-stable food.
“Together with the community’s generosity, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our seniors during times of crisis,” added Cominsky.
