“You mention his name anywhere in town, they know him,” said his Meals on Wheels driver. “‘You know Mr. Cash?’ ‘Yeah, I know Mr. Cash!’”
Cash survived the Texas City disaster of April 16, 1947, when a ship exploded at the port, one of the deadliest industrial accidents in U.S. history. He recalls the moment with clarity.
“They came down in big pieces … they fell behind me, each side of me, in front of me … great big pieces of iron from across the ship,” he said.

In recent years donations have declined, which means fewer seniors can be served even as demand grows.
