Meals on Wheels Galveston County Story: Mr. Cash
Meet Mr. George Cash: A Living Legend in Texas City
At 101 years old, Mr. George Cash is more than just a longtime resident of Texas City—he’s a local legend. Known for his boundless energy, generous spirit, and decades spent as a trusted mechanic, Mr. Cash has touched countless lives in his community.
“You mention his name anywhere in town, they know him. ‘You know Mr. Cash?’ ‘Yeah, I know Mr. Cash!’” shares his Meals on Wheels driver with a smile.
Mr. Cash’s remarkable life includes surviving one of the most devastating industrial disasters in U.S. history—the Texas City disaster of 1947. A ship explosion rocked the port and sent debris flying across the area. Cash recalls the moment with clarity:
“They came down in big pieces…they fell behind me, each side of me, in front of me… great big pieces of iron from across the ship,” he says.
Today, Mr. Cash continues to greet each day with a smile. Thanks to Meals on Wheels Galveston County (MOWGC), he receives regular, nutritious meals that help him remain healthy and independent in his own home.
He’s not alone. Over 97% of seniors served by MOWGC report that the program supports their ability to retain their health and age in place—avoiding the steep costs and challenges associated with full-time care facilities. This independence doesn’t just benefit seniors; it strengthens the entire community.
Meals on Wheels programs like MOWGC are sustained through a combination of government funding and private donations. But in recent years, donations have declined—meaning fewer seniors can be served, even as demand grows. Volunteers are also essential to delivering meals and the much-needed human connection they provide.
Check out Mr. Cash’s story below. “At Meals on Wheels Galveston County, we like to say that we deliver meals and more… and those meals are lifelines to our seniors,” says Program Manager Marie Mark.
