Key Dates & Deadlines for 2025 Giving

  • November 15: Last day to contact your IRA custodian to initiate a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) for the year.
  • December 2: Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity, serves as a strong kick-off for year-end fundraising campaigns.
  • December 15:  Recommended deadline to initiate gifts of appreciated stock to ensure they are received by year-end.
  • December 15: Deadline for recommending gifts from a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) to ensure they are received by IM on or before December 31.
  • December 31: The final day for cash and credit card donations to be received and for checks to be postmarked for a 2025 tax deduction.

Methods for Year-End Giving

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs): A favorite method for those age 70½ and older with an IRA, QCDs help satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) and are not counted as income.
  • Appreciated Securities: Donating appreciated stocks offers a tax deduction for itemizers and allows you to avoid capital gains taxes.
  • Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): You can make a tax-deductible contribution to a DAF and then recommend grants from the fund to public charities over time, allowing for “bunching” multiple years of gifts into one tax year.
  • Cash & Online Giving: All online gifts received by 11:59 p.m. CST on December 31 are eligible for a 2025 tax deduction, as are all gifts postmarked by December 31 in the mail.

New Year’s Resolutions

  • Legacy Giving: As you plan for the future, consider leaving a bequest to IM in your will.
  • 2026 Tax Considerations: Non-itemizers may want to defer donations until January to take advantage of the larger deduction in 2026.
