HOUSTON (June 27, 2024) – Volunteer Houston, a program of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, in collaboration with Houston muralist Jesse Sifuentes, is set to dedicate three new murals at local nonprofits. These murals were painted by volunteers at the 2024 Points of Light Conference in Houston. This initiative, funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, aims to enhance community spaces, promote volunteerism, and foster cultural enrichment.
The first of three mural dedications will take place on June 28th at 2:00 PM at The Beacon, located at 1212 Prairie St, Houston, TX 77002. The Beacon, the first recipient of one of these murals, plays a crucial role in Houston by providing daily services, civil legal aid, counseling, mentoring, and housing case management to individuals experiencing homelessness. Media representatives are invited to attend.
Jesse Sifuentes, a celebrated artist with over 30 years of experience as an East End resident, has significantly contributed to the area’s rich visual history through numerous public works.
“This mural is not just an artistic creation; it is a symbol of hope, community, and the enduring spirit of volunteerism,” said Andréa Shiloh, Vice President for Volunteerism and Civic Service at Interfaith Ministries. “Through this project, we aim to bring attention to the invaluable work done by local nonprofits and inspire others to get involved. There is no better time to help your neighbors, than right now.”
Two more mural dedications at Catholic Charities and Houston Humane Society will follow in the coming weeks.
Volunteer Houston urges community members to continue supporting public art projects and volunteerism, which play a vital role in the social, cultural, and economic development of the city.
